Database misuse – why an identity card is wrong for australia

One of he strongest reasons against implementing a national identity card (or 'smart-card' or 'Australia card') is that it is vulnerable to misuse. Rather than make us safer, an identity card makes us more vulnerable. A centralised database for all Australians is risky, expensive, and reckless.

A Victoria Police audit of access to the force's confidential database has revealed 35 officers had inappropriately used the system to check their personal details, information about relatives and celebrities, Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon has confirmed.
