There was yet another feature article on blogs in the Age today. But it didn’t really say anything new. There was one predictable academic (of course) who feels the need to shut everyone else down so as to cement his own position in the simplistic, techno-deterministic, ’scorched earth’ view of technological progress. A one-eyed blogger (or one-eyed anything) is such a boorish creature; a one trick pony that first must demonise and demolish the hard work of others, so as to claim proprietary knowledge over a medium that is for most of us, just one of the many hard-earned tools that help us engage with the rich world of ideas. Some of us can (and must) write books, and write papers, and make movies, and make blogs without the need to use our investment in any one of these mediums to diminish the hard work of others. There is enough room in the world of ideas for all sorts of mediums and all sorts of people that purport all sorts of ideas. A technological process (and a blogger that can’t move beyond this) is only half the picture; ‘process’ is the chaff of the one trick pony. (link).
