Queer @ King’s is an interdepartmental and interdisciplinary research group that has been operating in the School of Humanities since 2003, often with the support of the Annual Fund. Already an important feature in the research culture of the University of London for colleagues interested in gender and sexuality, Queer @ King’s joined the HRCs in November 2006 (Link)
Thursday 6 November, London Seminar in Digital Text and Scholarship, Room 274/5 (Stewart House), 17:30 – 19:30
Speaker: Martin Mueller (Northwestern) on “The Importance of Not-Reading?”
A century ago the German nonsense poet Christian Morgenstern wrote a poem about text-condensing spectacles. Referring to itself as an example of the power of those spectacles, the poem declares that read through them it would be unreadable because thirty-three instances of it would only add up to one question mark. This is a witty turn in the age-old history of “not-reading,” about which Pierre Bayard has written an entertaining book and to which Franco Moretti’s “distant reading” has made an important theoretical contribution. More information at www.sas.ac.uk/events/list/ies_whatson
Martin Mueller’s primary research field has been the uses of ancient epic and tragedy by European writers since the Renaissance.

From James Norman (Johnstown, Pennsylvania)
Here in Johnstown Pennsylvania on the weekend the queues stretched four blocks down the street, past the abandoned factories and old coal mill, a sea of flag waving Republicans had gathered to hear Sarah Palin at the War Memorial.
Since her entry onto the national stage as Vice Presidential candidate just a month ago, the Alaskan governor Sarah Palin has dramatically re-ignited the US culture wars.
The scene on the streets couldn’t have presented a clearer picture.

“Man this is the most corrupt town in America… no-one wants to know.” In the only bar on the shuttered main street of Johnstown Pennsylvania, Jackson, a one time major league footballer was holding forth to the assembled Saturday afternoon crowd which was three barflies, plus me and fellow Aussie journalist James Norman.

(I wrote this back in July. I have run an email list that I send to friends for about a decade now about ‘globalism’. You get the drift)
Dear Globalisers, (Actively Globalising since 1999)
A country has many classes, many races, may ideologies. But about 30 years ago a particularly powerful and ideologically ‘untouchable’ class moved into the political centre stage of Anglo societies. Let’s just call them the ’shopkeepers’ for sake of rigorous email argument.
And who has the world’s most powerful ’shopkeeping’ class? It ain’t the Americans with their Hummers, nor the French with their ideologies, it ain’t the Italians because they don’t play the world game, and it ain’t the Australians because they have a powerful Asian quarry to manage. It is the British. Napoleon knew this. British shopkeepers rule the world!

A Virtual Research Environment (VRE) enables a group of researchers, often across several institutions, to work collaboratively by forming a social structure and sharing resources over the internet. According to Michael Fraser, University of Oxford, ‘a VRE comprises a set of online tools and other network resources and technologies interoperating with each other to facilitate or enhance the processes of research practitioners within and across institutional boundaries’.

Information overload is an all too familiar modern malady, and we can’t all have a personal assistant on hand to help out. But strategies do exist to help people deal with today’s constant information barrage, as the recent study ‘Being wired or being tired’ explains. To help combat everything from interruptive texts, IM and status update messages to emails, ‘phone calls and television, here are ten suggestions for a healthier, less cluttered desk and a more serene state of mind (link)

xMod is a desktop application which can transform a repository of XML into a completely finished website.
The entire process can be setup and run to produce a basic website very quickly assuming some prerequisites:
A set of valid XML files. These would normally comply with a TEI DTD.
Some basic configuration. xMod needs to be told about the structure of the documents and the way in which they relate to one another (this forms the basis of the navigation system).
A ‘personality pack’. xMod accepts a special set of CSS and image files which determine the look and feel. However if they are not present, the completed website falls back on a default look and feel.
With this basic preparation done, the xMod application can be run and the resulting HTML output uploaded to a server (link).

These guides are a little out of date as the AHDS is no longer, but they do respresent a fantastic resource.
The AHDS publishes a series of Guides providing the arts and humanities research and teaching communities with practical instruction in applying recognised standards and good practice to the creation and use of digital resources. Some of the Guides focus on methods and applications relevant to humanities disciplines, such as history, archaeology, visual arts, performing arts and textual and linguistic studies. Others address those areas which cross disciplinary boundaries (link)
